Hideaki Umetsu is the managing partner of the New York office of Mori Hamada & Matsumoto, a Japanese law firm, and has been engaged in cross-border corporate matters for over 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate/M&A, compliance (including anti-corruption and investigations), business and human rights, and trade compliance (economic sanctions and import/export controls). He is actively involved in policy-making and legislative processes for the government and public sector. He has served as an expert panel member for the Japanese government, including working with the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) on anti-corruption legislation and the Cabinet Secretariat on economic security and geopolitical legal matters. He was the past Co-Chair of the Asia Pacific Regional Forum and is the current Co-Vice Chair of the Future of Legal Service Commission of the International Bar Association.
